Chapter 2.2 Flashcards
Cohesion
Attraction between molecules of the same substance
Hydrogen bond
Weak attraction between hydrogen atom and another atom
Adhesion
Attraction between molecules of different substances
Mixture
Material composed of multiple elements/compounds that are mixed, but not chemically combined
Solution
Type of mixture in which all components are evenly distributed
Solute
Substance dissolved in a solution
Solvent
Dissolving substance in a solution
Suspension
Mixture of water and undos solved materials
pH scale
Scale with values 0 - 14; used to measure concentration of hydrogen/hydroxide ions in solution
0 - 7 is acidic (more hydrogen ions)
7 - 14 is basic (more hydroxide ions)
Acid
Compound creating hydrogen ions in a solution
pH 0 - 7
Base
Compound creating hydroxide ions in a solution
pH 7 - 14
Buffer
Compound preventing sharp changes in pH
Capillary action
Effect causing water to rise in narrow tubes against gravity
Heat capacity
Amount of heat energy required to increase temperature
