Chapter 21- Infectious diseases affecting the respiratory system. Flashcards
What are the 2 parts of the respiratory tract?
Upper (from the nose to the larynx) and lower(from the trachea to the alveoli)
True are False. The lungs are a sterile organ?
Flase. Its alot of bactrieria so a hugh level of cytokines and antimicroibial peptides reside there.
What are the 9 major bacterial genera that are in the lungs?
- Preuotell
-Sphinogomos - Pseudomonas
-Acintobacter
-Fusobacterium
-Megasphaera
-Veillonella
-Staphyloccocus
-Streptocococus
How does bacteria get out of the lungs?
Through Mucocilary clearance of microbes, coughing, nonspecfic & specfic defenses.
What is ARDS?
Acute Respireatory syndome, where your gut microbome is found in the lungs.
What are the normal biota in the lung that can still cause diseases?
-Streptoccoccus pygogenes
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Streptoccoccus peamonie
-Neissera Mengitidis
Staphyloccoccus aureus
True or False Can Lactobacillus sakei can suppress Corynebacterium B reducing the risk of sinus infection?
True
What is the other name for common cold ?
Rhinitis
What are the symptoms of the Rhinitis?
Runny nose, sneezing & scratchy throat.
How many viruses can cause common cold?
200 Viruses
How many strains of rhino viruses are there?
approxaimetly 99 strains.
What is RSV?
Respiratory syntical virus- causes colds in must people but can be deterimental to infants.
What can be used to treat the common cold?
Over the counter anithistamines and decongestants zinc also prohibits rhinovirus form multiplying.
What is sinusitis?
Inflammation of any of the 4 sinuses in the skull.
What causes sinusitis?
Mainly caused by an allergen but can be cause by viruses or bacteria and less commonly fungi.
What are signs and symptoms of sinusitis?
Nasal conjestion, pressure above the nose of in the forehead, can sometimes feel like a toothache or a headache. facial swelling or tenderress is a common. Discharge for the nose can be oquae maybe green or yellow in bacterial infections.

-Streptocoocus pneumoniea
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Staphlycoocus aures
- Corynebacterium TB
Heemophilius influenzae
Ture of False is fungal sinitus rare?
True
What is a a common fungus in fungal sinusitis?
aspergillus fumigatus and bipolaris
What is acute ottis Media
Ear infection
extrapulmonary tuberculosis
A condition in which tuberculosis bacilli have spread to organs other than the lungs.
Mantoux test or PPD Test
An intradermal screening test for tuberculin hypersensitivity. A red, firm patch of skin at the injection site greater than 10 mm in diameter after 48 hours is a positive result that indicates current or prior exposure to the TB bacillus.
induration
Area of hardened, reddened tissue associated with the tuberculin test.
IGRA TB test
A blood drawn where tb is tested for. It detects if any T cells a reactive to TB added to blood.
