Chapter 18 - Infectious Diseases affecting the Skin and Eyes Flashcards
Integument
The out surface of the body: skin, hair, nails, sweat glands and oil glands.
How many layers of are in the skin?
5 layers
What are subaecous glands?
The sebum secrerting glands of the skin.
What are antimicrobial peptides (AMPS)
short protein molecules found in epithelial cells: have the ability to kill bacteria
What is lysozyme?
An enzyme found in sweat, tears and saliva that breaks down bacterial peptidoglycan.
What are the condtions of the skin that dictate MRSA?
Skin is raised, red, tender, localized lesions often featuring pus and hot to the touch.
What reaction is used to routingely diagnose MRSA?
Polymerase chain reaction
What is Impetigo?
A superfical bacterial infection that causes the skion to flake or peel off
folliculitis
An inflammatory reaction involving the formation of papules or pustules in clusters of hair follicles
furuncle
A boil; a localized pyogenic infection arising from a hair follicle.
carbuncle
A deep staphylococcal abscess joining several neighboring hair follicles.
What is the main cause of cellutiis, impetigo and erysipelas?
Strepococcus pyogenes
erysipelas
An acute, sharply defined inflammatory disease specifically caused by hemolytic Streptococcus. The eruption is limited to the skin but can be complicated by serious systemic symptoms.
What is coagulase?
A plasma-clotting enzyme secreted by Staphylococcus aureus. It contributes to virulence and is involved in forming a fibrin wall that surrounds staphylococcal lesions.
Dermolytic?
Capable of damaging the skin.
What is a bullous?
Consisting of fluid-filled blisters.
What is desquamate?
To shed the cuticle in scales; to peel off the outer layer of a surface.
What is TEN?
Toxic epidermal necrolysis
What is gas gangrene?
Disease caused by a clostridial infection of soft tissue or wound. The name refers to the gas produced by the bacteria growing in the tissue. Unless treated early, it is fatal. Also called myonecrosis.
Shingles
Lesions produced by reactivated human herpesvirus 3 (chickenpox) infection; also known as herpes zoster.
Varicella?
Informal name for virus responsible for chickenpox as well as shingles; also known as human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3).
Exanthem?
An eruption or rash of the skin.
subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE)
A complication of measles infection in which progressive neurological degeneration of the cerebral cortex invariably leads to coma and death
syncytium
A multinucleated protoplasmic mass formed by consolidation of individual cells.
