Chapter 21: Genetic Inheritance Flashcards
What is a genotype?
specific genes for a trait. represent them with capital and lowercase letters.
What are alleles?
versions of a gene
What are the two types of alleles?
dominant and recessive
Name two types of homozygous genotypes.
homozygous dominant and homozygous recessive
What is a phenotype and what are some examples?
physical expression of the genotype. ex: freckles, widows peak, unattached earlobes.
What is the genotypic and phenotypic ratio of crossing Ff X Ff?
1:2:1 genotypic, 3:1 phenotypic ratio
What is polygenic inheritance?
2 or more genes control one trait
Incomplete Dominance:
An intermediate trait, ex curly hair (CC) and straight hair (cc) make wavy hair (Cc)
Codominance:
both alleles are equally expressed in a heterozygote. ex: blood type AA and blood type BB produced blood type AB
What is sex linked inheritance?
traits are controlled by genes on the sex chromosomes
