Chapter 20.2 Flashcards
population dynamics
changes that occur in populations over time
Predators
organisms that kill and consume other organisms known as prey
selective pressure on predator and prey
- more successful consumers drive natural selection of the producers
- limited produces can limit consumer population
Producers and consumers typically
co evolve as a result of their interactions, producers will evolve to produce mechanisms to protect them from harm, predator populations must also evolve to ensure survival
Mutualism
both organisms are benefitted from each other
Commensalism
one organism is benefitted, the other is neither helped or harmed
Parasitism
one organism is benefitted, the other is harmed
Succession
slow progressive change in community structure
Primary succession
occurs where no life has occurred before
Pioneer community
FIRST species to colonize an area and initiate succession
Climax community
Latecomers in the process of succession. community remains relatively stable if there are no environmental changes
Ecological disturbance
event that changes the structure of community
Secondary succession
recolonization of an area after ecological disturbance, such as forest fire or flood or agricultural activity (soil is not always destroyed in ecological disturbance)
