Chapter 20 Vocab Flashcards
the heat energy that is absorbed or released by a substance during a phrase change.
Latent heat
the formation of large droplets by the combination of smaller droplets.
Coalescence
clouds that have a flat, uniform base and that begin to form at very low altitudes.
Stratus cloud
the temperature at which the condensation rate equals the evaporation rate.
Dew point
a condition in which a substance is cooled below its freezing point, condensation point, or sublimation point, without going through a change of state.
Supercooling
a feathering cloud that is composed of ice crystals and that has the highest altitude of any cloud in the sky.
Cirrus cloud
the process which a solid changes directly into a gas(term is also used for the reverse process.)
Sublimation
a ratio of the actual water vapor content of the air to the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation.
Relative humidity
a solid particle in the atmosphere that provides the surface on which water vapor condenses.
Condensation nucleus
an instrument used to measure relative humidity that consists of two identical thermometers.
Psychrometer
the process by which the temperature of an air mass decreases as the air mass moves over a cold surface
Advective cooling
When rain falls through a layer of freezing air near the ground, clear ice pellets.
Sleet
the mass of water vapor.
Mixing ratio
a liquid precipitation that is 2 mm in diameter.
Rain
the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas.
