Chapter 20 Questions Flashcards
Where do middle clouds form?
2,000 to 6,000 m
What is the most common form of solid precipitation?
snow, which consists of ice particles.
What might happen if enough energy is absorbed by liquid water?
Supercooling
Which rate is slower, adiabatic lapse rate for clear or adiabatic lapse rate for cloudy air?
The adiabatic lapse rate for cloudy air is slower compared to the rate for clear air.
What does nimbo- or –nimbus mean?
Rain-producing
What happens to the rate of evaporation when air temperature decreases?
The rate of evaporation is determined by the temperature of the air. The higher the temperature is, the higher the rate of evaporation is.So the slower the temp the slower the evaporation
What is the difference between absolute humidity and relative humidity?
ABSOULUTE is the mass of water vapor per unit volume of air that contains the water vapor, usually expressed as grams of water vapor per cubic meter of air and relative is the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation at a given temperature
Why does dew often form at night?
Because during the night, grass, leaves, and other objects near the ground lose heat. When the temperature of air cools below the dew point, condensation called dew is formed.
Suppose you are camping in a valley on a calm, clear night. When you awake you are surrounded by a thick fog. What type of fog is it, and how did it form?
advection fog, forms when warm, moist air moves across a cold surface. Advection fog is common along coasts, where warm, moist air from above the water moves in over a cooler land surface.
Where does most evaporation come from?
lakes, ponds, streams, and soil.
