What is HIV?
retrovirus that attacks and causes destruction of T lymphocytes
How is HIV transmitted?
mother to neonate via placenta and breast milk
Ideal delivery for HIV mothers?
C-section at 38 weeks
What procedure is not able to be performed with an HIV + mother? (2)
amniocentesis and episiotomy
How should an HIV + mother feed her infant?
via formula, not breast milk
What is gestational diabetes mellitus?
glucose intolerance with its onset during pregnancy or first detection during pregnancy
How often do we monitor glucose levels DURING labor?
every 1-2 hours
What is at the bedside for gestational diabetes patients during labor?
50% dextrose solution
How often do we monitor glucose levels POST labor?
every 2-4 hours for the first 48 hours
