What does APGAR stand for?
A= appearance (color) P= pulse (heart rate) G= grimace (reflux irritability) A= activity (muscle tone) R= respiratory (respiratory effort)
When do we assess for the APGAR score?
1 minute, 5 minutes, than 10 minutes if score
What medications are given at birth?
vitamin K and ophthalmia neonatorum
What is gestational age?
stage of maturity
What is vernix caseosa?
thick white substance that protects the skin of the fetus
What is the shape of the ANTERIOR fontanel and when does it close?
diamond shaped
closes by 18-24 months
What is the shape of the POSTERIOR fontanel and when does it close?
triangle shaped
smaller than anterior fontanel
closes by 6-12 weeks
How many diapers should an infant go through a day for adequate hydration?
6-12 diapers
When does the umbilical cord fall off?
7-10 days
How often do infants sleep?
sleep 15 hours a day, but 2-4 hours at a time
