Chapter 20 -- Acids And Bases Flashcards
Where does the word acid come from
The word acid comes from the Latin word acid is which means sour
Name at least 5 different everyday substances that contain acid
Sour milk contains lactic acid
Hydrochloric acid is present in the stomach
Acid drops sweets contain citric acid
Lemons and grape fruit contain citric acid
Vitamin C is an acid called ascorbic acid
Ant stings and nettle stings contain formic acid
What color does litmus paper turn to if put in an acid/ base
It turns red if put in an acid and to blue if put in a base
Define an indicator
An indicator is a compound that shows by means of a color change whether a substance is acidic or basic
Name at least 3 different everyday substances containing bases
Drain cleaner contains a base called sodium hydroxide (caustic soda)
Indigestion tablets contain magnesium hydroxide. Milk of magnesia also contains this base.
Bath salt contain a base called sodium carbonate
Window cleaners and oven cleaners contain ammonia solution
Toothpaste contains a base called sodium hydrogenencarbonate
What is a neutral substance
A neutral substance is neither an acid or base
Examples of a neutral substance
Water sugar and salt
What is the PH scale
The PH scale is used to tell us how acidic or basic a substance is
What numbers do the pH scale go to
0 to 14
How does the ph scale work
If it is a 7 on the ph scale it is a neutral
If it is under 7 it would be either a strong acid or weak acid
If it is over 7 it would either be a strong base/alkaline or a weak base/ alkaline
What’s the difference between an alkaline and a base
An alkaline is soluble and the base is not
What color is a highly basic substance
Blue
Color for mildly basic substance
Green
Color for neutral
White/ clear
Color for mildly acidic
Orange
