- Light exposure
Anodontia
Missing teeth
Supernumerary
Extra teeth
Dens in dente
Tooth within a tooth
Main cause of anodontia
Congenitelly missing teeth
Hypercementosis
Excessive cementum formation
Dilaceration
Sharp bend in root usually in premolars
Taurodontia
A tooth normally a mandubular molar with a very large pulp chamber and very short roots
Gemination
A single tooth but divides into two teeth. This is not the fusion of two teeth
Fusion
Two teeth joined or connected almost always at the crown
Concresence
When the cementum of 2 adjacent teeth is joined or fused. Appears as overlapping roots
Dentinogenesis imperfecta
Malformation of dentin
Amelogenesis imperfecta
Malformation of enamel
Periapical abscess
Cause by bacteria that has reached the pulp and cause irreversible pulp damage
Granuloma
Granulation tissue that is continuous with the PDL and attached to the root of the apex
Cyst
Fluid filled or semi-solid area that appears radiolucent on a radiograph
Forms of cysts include
Dentigerous cyst
Odontogenic cyst
Nonodontogenic cyst
Dentigerous cyst
Most often with supernumery teeth but also with impacted teeth
Odontogenic cyst
Includes cyst formed because of a tooth so may be periapical, residual, dentigerous.
Nonodontogenic cyst
Any cyst not arising from a tooth
Includes incisive canal cyst (nasopalatine) and globulomaxillary cyst located between the lateral and canine
Odontogenic tumors
Formed by an abnormal proliferation of odontogenic cells (cells that form teeth)
Ameloblastoma
Large radiolucient area of enamel origin with mono or multilocular (many compartments) that gives a soap bubble appearance - quite rare
Odontoma
Most common and is a small mishapened mass of teeth radiopaque with a radiolucient fibous capsule resembling a cyst
Cementoma
A cementifying fibroma usually on mandibular anteriors in women and require no treatment
Tooth resorption
Primary teeth undergo in response to erupting permanent teeth
Retained roots
Very common on radiographs caused by: Primary tooth root tips, crown has decayed completely away, dentist left in extraction
Calcifications
Pulp stone
Sialoliths
Rhinoliths
Phleboliths
Sialoliths
Salivary stones that are deposits of calcium salts in salivary glands or ducts
Rhinoliths
Stones in the maxillary sinus
Pheboliths
calcified thrombi in soft tissues usually the cheek
Ossifications
Condensing osteitis
Osteosclerosis
Condensing osteitis
The sclerosis of hardening bone as a result of infection
Osteosclerosis
Abnormally dense bone not a result of infection
Carcinoma
Of epithelial origin
Sarcoma
Of connective tissue origin - produce a change in bone early on with a patchy appearance
Exostosis
Localized overgrowth on bone such as a torus or tori that may occur on the hard tissue of the palate or the lingual surfaces of the mandible
Fractures
Appears as thin RL lines similar to nutrient canals - May or may not line up bone to bone
