Chapter 2 Vocabulary Flashcards
What is a ray?
The union of a half line and it’s origin. It extends infinitely in one direction form a point
What is a half line?
The set of all points on a line on a given side of a given point of the line
What does between mean?
In an intervening position, separating
What is a segment?
The set consisting of two points and all the points in between
What is a half plane?
A subset of a plane consisting of all points on a given side of a line in the plane
What is an edge of a half plane?
The line that separates the plane into two half-planes. The line is not part of either half-plane.
What are opposite half-planes?
The two half-planes that are separated by a particular line of the plane.
What is an angle?
The union of two distinct rays with a common endpoint
What are the sides of an angle?
The two rays that form the angle
What is the vertex of an angle?
The common endpoint (origin) of the two rays
What is a triangle?
The Union of segments that connect three no collinear points
What is a closed curve?
A curve that begins and ends at the same point
What is a simple curve?
A curve that does not intersect itself
What is a simple closed curve?
A simple curve that is also a closed curve
What is a circle?
The set of all points that are given distance from a given point in a plane
What is the center of a circle?
The given point in the plane
What is the radius of the circle?
A segment that connects a point on the circle with the center
What is the chord of a circle?
A segment having both endpoint a on the circle
What is a diameter?
A chord that passes through the center of the circle
What is an arc?
A curve that is a subset of a circle
What is an interior of a circle?
The set of,all planar points whose distance from the center of the circle is less than the length of the radius
The exterior of an angle?
The set of all planar points whose distance from the center is greater than the length of the radius
What is a region?
The union of a simple closed curve and its interior
What is a convex?
The set that has the property that any two of its points determine a segment contained in the set
What is concave?
A set that is not convex
What is a polygon?
A simple closed curve that consists only of segments
What is the side of a polygon?
One of the segments that define the polygon
What is a vertex of a polygon?
An endpoint of a side of the polygon
What is the angle of a polygon?
An angle with two properties: it’s vertex is a vertex of the polygon and each side of the angle contains a side of the polygon
What is a surface?
A connected set of points in space having only the thickness of a point
What is a sphere?
A surface in space consisting of the set of all points at a given distance from the given point
What is the center of a sphere?
A given point
What is radius?
A segment that connects a point of the sphere with the center
What is a closed surface?
A surface with a finite size that divides other points in space into an interior and an exterior
What is a cone?
The union of a region and all segments that connect the boundary of the region with a specific non coplanar point
What is a cylinder?
The union of two regions of the same size and shape in different parallel planes, and the set of all segment that join corresponding points on the boundaries of the regions
What is a prism?
A cylinder with polygonal regions as bases
What is a pyramid?
A cone with a polygonal region as its base
What is a regular polyhedron?
A convex polyhedron having having two properties
