Q

What are the properties of Metals?

A
  • shiny luster, vary in color although most are silvery
  • malleable and ductile
  • good conductors of heat and electricity (physical property)
  • most metal oxides are ionic solids that are basic (ionic compounds)
  • tend to form cations in aqueous solution
  • high melting point

Q

What are the properties of Nonmetals?

A
  • no luster, various color
  • solids are usually brittle; they can be hard or soft
  • poor conductors of heat and electricity
  • most nonmetal oxides are molecular substances that form acidic solutions (molecular compounds)
  • low melting point
  • tend to form anions or oxyanions (oxygen-containing anions) in aqueous solution

Q

What are the properties of metalloids?

A
  • Have some metallic properties, but lack some
  • Electrical conductivity in between that of metals and nonmetals
  • Several metalloids are electrical semiconductors (Eg: silicon)
