Primary goals of the American revolution
To restore the colonists rights as British subjects
Purposes of the declaration of independence?
Bitter attack against the British king for abuse said to have been done to the colonists over a long period of time
Articles of Confederation – governmental power
Most popular reside in the states.
Congress had the power to raise and maintain a Navy and Army (but not to tax)
Effect of French and Indian war on British – colonial relations
Following it’s victory in the French and Indian war in 1763 (also known as Seven Years’ War), Britain obtained an enormous territory to govern.
To raise revenues to defend and administer the territory, it raised taxes on the colonists and tightened enforcement of trade regulations.
John Locke’s influences on Jefferson
Locke and Declaration of Independence (mostly written by Jefferson) contained parallels in things involving Natural Rights, Purpose of Government, Equality, Consent of the Governed, Limited Government, Right to Revolt.
Locke was the main philosophical influence.
Shay’s rebellion—causes
Policies favored debtors over creditors.
Farmers’ land was being lost to creditors.
Ratification process for the Constitution
Have at least 9 of the 13 states approve the document implementation (ignoring the requirement that the Articles of Confederation be amended only by unanimous consent)
Identify the Federalist papers
A collection of 85 article written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison under the name “Publius” us to defend the Constitution in detail
Connecticut Compromise
The compromise reached at the Constitutional Convention That established two houses of Congress:
House of Representatives— representation is based on state’s share of the US population.
Senate — each state has two representatives.
