Chapter 2 Test ⚗️ Flashcards
Anything that occupies space and has mass; a physical substance
Matter
Made out of just one kind of particle
e.g. gold, pure water, pure oxygen
Pure Substance
Combination of two or more pure substances or other mixtures
Mixture
Solid, gas, or liquid
Most pure substances can be in one of these three states, or phases
State of Matter
Usually determines a substance’s state of matter
Temperature
The attraction between particles is greater than their ability to move away form each other
Solid
Can move around but are still close together
Liquid
Does not have a fixed shape
Gas
Acts like gases, but their particles move so fast and collide so hard that they break apart and become electrically charged
Plasma
A solid becomes a liquid
Melting
A liquid becomes a solid
Freezing
A liquid becomes a gas using heat
Vaporization
If vaporization happens so fast that the liquid forms bubbles that rise through the liquid
Boiling
A liquid becomes a gas in between the melting point and the boiling point of the liquid
Evaporation
When vapor particles stick together
Condensation
