Chapter 2 Structure And Function Of Cells Flashcards
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
The chemical energy that cells use. It is produced by mitochondria
Apoptosis
The process of programmed cell death
Active Transport
The movement of dissolved substances from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration. Requires energy
Archaeans
Prokaryotic organisms
Bacteria
Unicellular organism. Prokaryotic.
Cell membrane
Boundary of the cell. Partially permeable
Cell wall
Semi rigid structure. Outside the cell membrane. Found in plants, algae, fungi and bacteria
Cellular respiration
The process of converting chemical energy of food into energy usable by the cell. Mostly ATP
Cellulose
Complex carbohydrate (many glucose molecules). Main component of plant cell walls
Chlorophylls
Green color that traps the energy of sunlight. Required for photosynthesis
Chloroplasts
Organelles containing chlorophyll which are essential photosynthesis
Chromatin
Stained substance found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells
Cilia
Many whip like structures that are enclosed in a thin layer of cell membrane
Cytoskeleton
A network of filaments that hold the organelles in place inside a cell
Cytosol
Watery fluid found in a eukaryotic cell, contains many dissolved materials
Deoxyribonucleic acid
DNA contains genetic information, organized into chromosomes in eukaryotic cells
Diatoms
Unicellular eukaryotic organisms, common in sea water and fresh water
Diffusion
The net movement of a substance from a high concentration to a low concentration, no energy required
Endocytosis
Bulk movement of a solid or liquid into the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum
An organelle that has a system of channels that transport substance throughout the cell
Endosomes
Organelles in animal cells that pass on newly digested material onto lysosomes
Eukaryotes
Cells or organisms with a membrane bound nucleus
Eukaryotic cells
Cells with a membrane bound nucleus
Exocytosis
The bulk transport of material out of cells via vesicles
Facilitated diffusion
A type of diffusion that involves a specific carrier molecule to assist the substance across the plasma membrane
Flagellum
A whip like organelle attached to the plasma membrane. Aids in movement of organisms.
