Chapter 2 - Special Considerations in Design Flashcards
ethics
the moral obligation to do what is right
environmental considerations (2)
- Sustainability
2. Green Design
sustainability definition
means thinking about creating building and interior environments now, while also considering their use in the distant future
renewable resources
materials such as wood from trees that can be replanted in sustained-growth forests
nonrenewable resources
materials that can’t be replaced naturally, metals, minerals, fossil fuels
resource efficiency
reduce, reuse, recycle and repair
sustainability (5)
- use of resources
- resource efficiency
- modest living
- design longevity
- universal and transgenerational design
universal design
implies that well-planned designs will meet the needs of every user without drawing attention to persons with disabilities
transgenerational design
design that functions for users in various states of life (from different generations), implying that the design can be used continually without change over a long period, doesn’t focus on the occupant’s age but rather on the environment’s usefulness to users of any age
green design
describes selection of materials that produce a sustainable environment - the materials have come from a renewable source and removing them will not harm the earth’s environment
LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, non-profit, green building rating system, certifies buildings and systems
IAQ
Indoor air quality, can be caused by VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that off-gas
CFL
compact fluorescent lamp
atrium (atria)
indoor courtyards
clerestory windows
windows placed at the top of the wall
