- To examine your own life
- To be direct & honest with members in a caring & respectful way
Openness means:
Revealing enough to give a sense of who you are, but not revealing every aspect of personal life
In dealing with criticism from members, leaders must have:

Absorbing content, noting gestures & subtle changes in voice & expression. Sensing underlying messages.
Active Listening
Conveying the essence of what a person has communicated so the person can see it.
Reflecting
Focusing on key underlying issues and sorting out confusing and conflicting feelings.
Clarifying
Particularly useful after a check-in @ beginning of group. Leader might point out common elements which connect members.
Summarizing
The aim of these skills is to help group members reach their goals. Involve opening up clear communication among members and helping them increase their responsibility for direction of group.
Facilitating
Being able to openly grasp anothers experience and at the same time maintain one’s own separateness.
Empathizing
Offering possible explanations for potential behaviours or symptoms.
Interpreting
Often overused can be distracting. Appropriately timed ‘what’ and ‘hows’ can intensify the experience.
Questioning
Being alert for cues that members have some common concern, promoting member interaction and raising level of cohesion.
Linking
Two step: Challenge the behavior to be examined and avoid labeling, and share how he feels about the persons behavior.
Confronting
This skill can be therapeutic or counterproductive. Too much of this tells members they are unable to support themselves.
Supporting
This helps to establish group norms and is an important intervention particularly during the groups initial stages.
Blocking
What are some behaviors that need blocking?

The ability to appraise certain behavior problems and choose appropriate interventions
Assessing
Showing a desired behaviour

Leaders offer these to help members develop an alternative course of thinking or action.
