Chapter 2-Sensation And Perception Flashcards
Perception
Used to refer to more holistic and unified experience of object and events
Organization and interpretation of sensations
Naive realism
The view of perception that says our perception is the way it is because that’s the way the world is.
Sensory adaptation
The reduced responsiveness of our sensory systems when exposed to prolonged, continuos stimulation
Problems with naive realism
1 individual differences in perception, including developmental and interspecies differences
2 Changing perception of an unchanging stimulus
3 Existence of illusions
Traduction
The process by which receptor cells change environment energy into neural impulses that can be sent through the nervous system
Psychophysics
The study of the relationship between physical characteristics of stimuli and psychological experience.
Absolute threshold
The smallest amount of stimulus energy required for an observer to reality detect the stimulus.
Gustav Theodor Fechner
Founder of psychophysics
Signal detention theory
Techniques that allow a research to separate sensitivity to a stimulus from factors that maybe affecting a willingness to report the presence of the stimulus.
Difference threshold
The smallest amount of change in a stimulus that can be realizable detected
Just noticeable difference (jnd)
The psychological unit of measurement corresponding to the different threshold
Weber’s Law
Relationship between the amount of a stimulus required to produce a jnd and the amount of the standar stimulus
Five senses
Vision Hearing Smell Taste Touch
