Q

Properties of metals
All metals share some properties.

*Metals are usually shiny

*Metals will make a ringing sound when you
hit them

Metals are strong and tough
~They do not shatter or crack easily when hit or
dropped

Metals can be shaped by bending them
~They are malleable: can be hammered into
different shapes
~They are ductile : can be stretched out into
different shapes

Metals do not melt easily
~Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room
temperature

Some metals are magnetic
~Metals like Iron, steel, nickel and cobalt

*Metals are good conductors of heat

Stuff you need to remember!

*The surface of metals will become dull after a while
*Big lumps of metals are hard to test for bendiness
*Bottles and cups ring when they are hit but they
are not made up of metal

Q

Gold is commonly used for
jewellery because it is shiny.

Copper is commonly used for
electrical wiring because it is
flexible and conducts electricity
well.

Iron is used to build bridges and
buildings because it is strong.

Stainless steel cannot rust and is a
good conductor of heat so it is
used to make kitchen utensils.

Brass is used to make
musical instruments.

Nickel is used to make some
coins.

Aluminium is used for making
cans and foil.

Mercury is the only metal
that is a liquid, thus it is
used in thermometers.

Lead is used in car batteries.

Q

Sulfur is added to rubber to make
it hard.

Pure oxygen is used in hospitals
for people with breathing
difficulties.

Helium is used to fill up
balloons because it is a very
light gas.

There are many different kinds of non-metals
which can be used for different jobs.

Carbon can be used to
purify water.

Chlorine is used to kill bacteria
and treat swimming pools.

Silicon is used to make
computer chips

Q

Properties of non-metals
All non-metals share some properties.

Non-metals are usually dull.
~They do not reflect light very well

Non-metals do not conduct heat energy very
well
~This is useful for making cooking utensils.

Non-metals that are solids are brittle
~They shatter and crack easily when hit or dropped

Non-metals do not conduct electricity.
~This is useful for making electric cables and plugs.

Stuff you need to remember!

*Non-metals are not as strong or hard as metals
are.

*Many non-metals are gases.

*The non-metals that are not gases have low
boiling and melting points.
