Chapter 2: Research Flashcards
Descriptive Methods
Simply Describes Behaviors
Correlational Studies
shows relationships between behaiors
Experimental Research
to prove cause and effects
Case Study
describes the behaviors of one person in detail
Survey
Finding out the attitudes or behaviors of a group using self reports.
Naturalistic Observation
Describes an individual’s behavior in their natural environemnt
Population
The group that one wants to be able to generlaze
Random Sample
a portion of the population that is selected randomly to participate. Everyone must have an equal chance to participate
Correlational Research
Looking for a relationship between two or more events
Positive Correlation
When variables move in the same direction
Negative Correlation
When variable move in opposite directions
Illusory Correlation
the perception of a relationship between variables that does not actually exist
Experimental Research
a controlled test of a hypothesis in which the researched manipulates one variable to discover another.
Independent Variable
what is being manipulated
Dependent Variable
What is affected and measured
Operational Definition
how the dependent variable will be measured
Experimental Group
gets the independent variable
control group
treated the same as the experimental except for the variable. They often receive a placebo.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
having a strong belief about a result or future event and, unknowingly, acting to fulfill the behavior
Double Blind
Experimenter and groups don’t know who is in which group.
Single Blind
Only participants are unaware of which group they are in
Confounding Variables
anything that skews results; any other variations between groups
Informed Consent
person agrees to participate, but they can leave at any time.
Debrief subjects
have to tell people the truth of the study
Variance
compare each score tot he mean score
Standard Deviation
square root of variance.
z-score
how many standard deviations away from a mean a person is
percentile
what percent of people you score better than
