What is the Ecuneme?
The portion of the earth surface occupied by permanent human settlement.
What is the natural increase rate? (NIR)
The percentage by which a population increases in a year
What is doubling time?
The number of years needed to double a population
What is the crude birth rate? (CBR)
The total number of live births in a year for every 1000 people alive in the society
What is the crude death rate? (CDR)
The total number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people alive in the society.
What is demographic transition?
The process of change in a society’s population from high crude death/birth rates to low crude death/birth rates and low rates of natural increase as well as a higher total population.
What is sex ratio?
The number of males per 100 females in the population.
What is the maternal mortality rate?
The number of female deaths related to 100,000 live births related to or caused by pregnancy.
What is the infant mortality rate? (IMR)
The annual number of deaths of infants under 1 year of age compared with total live births
What is the potential support ratio/ elderly support ratio?
The number of working age people divided by the number of elderly people (65 and older)
What is life expectancy?
The average number of years a person can be expected to live given current social, medical, and economic conditions.
What is the dependency ratio?
The ratio of people who are too young or too old to work compared to the number of people who are in their productive years.
What is a population pyramid?
A bar graph that displays the percentage of a place’s population for each age and gender.
What is overpopulation?
A condition in which the number of people in an area exceeds the capacity at which that environment can hold
