Chapter 2: Pneumatic Systems Flashcards
components that pneumatic systems can be used
1) brakes
2) moving doors
3) emergency devices
difference between hydraulic and pneumatic systems
hydraulic is incompressible pneumatic is compressible
what kind of fluid is pneumatic bottle charged with?
compressed air, CO2, nitrogen
disadvantage of using emergency bottle as only supply for air
cannot be recharged mid flight (bottles are charge on ground)
what is an alternate source of air that pneumatic power can have?
engine bleed air from compressor
why is pneumatic systems lighter in weight than hydraulics?
pneumatic systems does not have reservoirs, pumps, regulators
pneumatic systems components
1) single stage / 2 stage air compressors
2) moisture separator & chemical drier
why is intercooler used for air compressors in pneumatic systems?
heat is generated during compression of air
remove heat, reduce power to drive compressor
why is moisture separator & chemical drier needed in pneumatic systems?
prevent freezing & corrosion which can prevent check/control valves from working
what is the purpose of chemical drier?
absorb moisture along the lines and parts of systems
advantages of pneumatic systems over electric/hydraulics
1) air is available (unlimited supply)
2) components and simpler & lighter
3) does not require return line (weight saving)
4) free from temperature problems
5) no fire hazard & low risk of explosion
main function of pneumatic systems
emergency source of pressure
