Chapter 2 - Pituitary hormones Flashcards
What are the 6 hormones secreted by the anterior lobe
- Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Luteinising Hormone (LH)
- Growth Hormone (GH)
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
- Prolactin
what are the target organs and effects of FSH
Gonads, growth of follicles and production of sperm
what are the target organs and effects of LH
Gonads, Ovulation and maintenance of corpus luteum and secretion of testosterone
what are the target organs and effects of GH
All cells, stimulates body growth (particular growth of skeleton). Increases rate at which amino acids are taken up by cells and built into proteins
what are the target organs and effects of TSH
Thyroid gland, stimulates production and release of hormones from the thyroid
what are the target organs and effects of ACTH
Adrenal Cortex, Secretion of hormones from the adrenal cortex
what are the target organs and effects of PRL
Mammary glands, milk production
What are the 2 hormones secreted by the posterior lobe
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
2. Oxytocin (OT)
What are the target organs and effects of ADH
Kidneys, causes kidneys to remove water from the urine and return it to the bloodstream by increasing membrane permeability to water in the distal convoluted tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney nephrons, increase water reabsorption.
What are the target organs and effects of OT
- Uterus, contractions of uterus during childbirth
- Mammary Glands, release of milk
