Chapter 2 - Part Forms Flashcards
What is one-part form?
One-part form is a complete composition consisting of only one of the primary units of form, such as phrase, period, phrase group or double period. Denoted as A.
What is binary (or two-part) form?
The binary form (denoted as AB) is the smallest of the combined units of form and is composed of two sections or divisions, each ending on a complete cadence.
How do the parts in binary form differ?
Each part is contrasting in material and there is no return to the original idea (first part), although the two parts may end similarly and a motive may at times be common to both parts. Part A may end in the tonic key or it may modulate to the dominant or some other key.
When was two-part form considered popular?
In the Baroque period. It served as the basis for much of instrumental music of Bach, Couperin, Rameau and Scarlatti.
What is ternary (or three-part) form?
The ternary form (denoted as ABA) basically consists of statement, new material, re-statement. Variety and contrast are achieved by the introduction of new material. It is the most frequently found form in music.
What is rounded binary form?
Rounded binary form is a type of ternary form with the B section ending on an incomplete cadence (usually the dominant) followed by a return of part of the A section.
What is five-part form?
Five-part form (ABACA) is an outgrowth and extension of the three-part form with the addition of another part (C), followed by a return to part A.
How is five-part form different from three-part form where parts A and B are repeated (ABABA)?
Five-part form is similar to three-part form (ABABA), except the repeated B section (fourth part) is replaced by a section differing in pitch or materials.
What is barform?
Designates the pattern AAB, based on old German poetry, with two similar stanzas (AA) and a contrasting closing one (B). Wagner uses this form frequently in Die Meistersinger.
