What is one-part form?

A

One-part form is a complete composition consisting of only one of the primary units of form, such as phrase, period, phrase group or double period. Denoted as A.

A

The binary form (denoted as AB) is the smallest of the combined units of form and is composed of two sections or divisions, each ending on a complete cadence.

How do the parts in binary form differ?

A

Each part is contrasting in material and there is no return to the original idea (first part), although the two parts may end similarly and a motive may at times be common to both parts. Part A may end in the tonic key or it may modulate to the dominant or some other key.

The ternary form (denoted as ABA) basically consists of statement, new material, re-statement. Variety and contrast are achieved by the introduction of new material. It is the most frequently found form in music.
