Medulla
Base of the brain stem controls breathing and heartbeat.
Brainstem
Oldest part of the brain. Responsible for automatic survival functions.
Reticular formation
Nerve network, plays important role in arousal.
Thalamus
Sensory switchboard, responds to all senses except smell.
Hippocampus
Structure in the limbic system linked to memory.
Cerebellum
‘Little brain’ movements and balance.
Limbic system
Associated with emotions, such as fear, aggression, and drives for food and sex.
Amygdala
Emotions of fear and aggression.
Hypothalamus
Directs eating drinking temperature and control emotions. Governs the endocrine system.
Glial cells
Cells in the nervous system that support nourish and protect neurons.
Association areas
Areas of the cerebral cortex that are not involved in primary motor or sensory functions,they are involved in higher mental functions.
