Media literacy is
Ability to analyze media content critically and identify political/social messages, ownership stereotypes and bias
· When we analyze media content critically by considering its presentation and underlying messages
· Being me This impacts how we consume media, who influences media creation, and how we perceive the world around us.
Media Literacy Skills
Consider source behind media · Examine framing of media content · What stereotypes are presented · Question the media ecosystem · Make the media
Semiotics
Study of signs or symbols
· Helps us understand the process of communication and how meaning is generated
· Images of things signify certain things. Associating a rose with romance and love, etc.
Framing
· How messages are packaged and communicated can influence our attitudes/actions
· Says we must classify, organize and interpret things into frameworks to simplify/complex our lives
· Examples: how Elementary and Secondary Education Act was changed to No Child Left Behind Act
Media oligopoly
· When media ownership and diversity is severely limited because it is ran by just a few media groups see economic convergence
Media bias
· How info may be skewed toward a particular viewpoint
Media Grammar
· “The rules by which a medium presents itself and is used and understood by the audience”
example: songs on radio are usually only 4 minutes.
Conventions, understood as rules, governing how content is presented in a given medium

Print to picture ratio in newspapers
