Mass Communication
Any technology based means of communicating between large numbers of people distributed widely over space and time.
General Mass Media Theory
Communication flow is largely one way from sender or course to audience
Communication is from one or a few to many like instagram posting, etc
Communication is anonymous personal connection with source is rare example: reading a ny times article, we don’t know people who wrote it
Audiences are seen as passive recipients of messages and provide little interaction/feedback (EX: General Conference)
convergence
merging two or more things into one, into one place/platform
3 types are technical, cultural, economic
Determines how we use media. Now there are ads on Facebook
technical convergence
Specific types of media, print, audio, video, all converging into a digital form. impacts how media is used. Taking a traditional form of media like a paper nook and a kindle (multiple books in one source)
economic convergence
impacts organizational changes: Merging of internet companies with traditional media companies. 6 Corps that control the world: Example: Disney owns ABC, ESPN, PIXAR, MIRAMAX, Marvel Studios. This is also an example of consolidation
cultural convergence
Attitude or values are changed. Technology changes and bridges gaps in our culture and how we perceive other cultures. i.e.: Honey Boo Boo, Duck Dynasty.
functions of media
entertainment, surveillance, correlation, cultural transmission
entertainment as a function of media
perpetuate stereotypes, promotes escapism (disconnecting to your world around you and focusing on for example: stars of gossip girl, etc), cheap vs fine art, embedded with cultural values and symbols
surveillance as function of media
Journalism leaking information. Legit definition: the journalism function of mass communication, which provides info about the processes, issues, events, and other developments in society; verifying actual evidence through photography
correlation as function of media
The ways in which media interpret events and issues and ascribe meanings that help individuals understand their roles within the larger society and culture. ex: planned parenthood. who’s side are you on?
cultural transmission as function of media
Dominant culture and subcultures are transferred from one generation to the next or to immigrants. When someone moves to America they start to consume media to know what is acceptable, etc. This creates a homogenized culture.
Glass Technology

very good example of convergence
technology is apart of everything
