Is determined by our speech community, regional background, social class, and individual factors and experiences. It is what distinguishes us as individuals.

The minimal unit of meaning. The smallest unit of language that carries semantic interpretation.
- Can be stems, endings for plurals and verb tenses, suffixes and prefixes.
- Each word has 1 morpheme.
