Chapter 2- Heckert and Heckert Flashcards
Summary of an Integrated Typology of Deviance to Ten Middle-Class Norms
In this article l, Heckert and Heckert challenge the traditional definition of deviance which consists of negative components. While deconstructing and redefining deviance, the authors look at deviance through different contexts and forms. For instance, deviance is looked at when publics reactions to deviant acts are positive. Deviance is also explored in the two dimensions of under and non or over-conformity especially when it comes to how “behavior corresponds to normative expectations “ Four other analytical typologies and dimensions are described regarding to the reactions of deviance such as negative deviance, rate-busting, deviance admiration, and positive deviance. Furthermore the authors take these dimensions of deviance and integrate them with common middle-class norms. The act of integrating deviance with middle-class norms can create negative forms of deviance including “lying, hedonism, irresponsibility, and an invasion of privacy.” Examples and case scenarios are also incorporated in this article in order for the reader to reconstruct their pre-conceived notions of deviance.
