Chapter 2 -- Fundamentals of Embalming Flashcards
Differentiate and explain intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors.
Intrinsic factors (within the body): pathologic processes, circulatory conditions, degree of body moisture, distribution of preservative chemicals, etc.
Extrinsic factors (out of the body): type of preservative used, strength/volume of embalming solutions, environmental factors surrounding the burial/etc such as moisture, molds, bacteria, insects, and air.
What can the injection of the proper embalming chemicals do? (Restoration)
Restore the contour of facial features, decrease facial swelling, remove postmortem intravascular discolourations, reduce extravascular blood discolourations, restore the natural facial complexion.
What are the four classifications of embalming?
- Arterial Embalming.
- Cavity Embalming.
- Hypodermic Embalming.
- Surface Embalming.
What is Arterial Embalming?
It uses the blood vascular system to deliver preservative solutions to all areas of the body at once. Solution is injected into an artery of the body, evacuating blood products from a vein. Done first.
What is Cavity Embalming?
The direct treatment of the contents of three body cavities: thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic (as well as the lumina (central cavity) of the hollow viscera).
Applied in two phases: aspiration of the cavity contents, and injection of undiluted cavity fluid. Done using a trocar. Done after arterial embalming.
What is Hypodermic Embalming?
The subcuticular (layer of skin below epidermal) injection of emblaming chemicals directly into the tissues using a hypodermic syringe and needle or a hypovalve trocar. Supplemental procedure.
What is Surface Embalming?
The preservation of tissues by direct contact. Applied using a cotton compress that makes contact with the tissues/applied directly to the skin surface. Supplemental procedure.
What information should the Embalming and Decedent Care Report provide?
The condition of the body before preperation, manner/methods of preperation, any postembalming or postcare treatments, date and time of arrival of the body into the custody of the funeral home/embalming facility, starting/ending times of preperation, and the full name/license number of the embalmer and others autorised to assist in preperation.
