Chapter 2 - Forces Flashcards
What is the size of a force measured in ?
Newtons (N)
Balanced forces …….… the velocity of an object
do not change
Unbalanced forces will ……. the velocity of an object
change
What is newtons first law ?
In the absence of unbalanced forces, an object will continue to move in a straight line at a constant speed. (It’s velocity is constant)
How do you carry out the experiment to investigate newtons first law ?
1 - set the linear air track is on flat surface and level
2- measure the length of the interrupt card
3- connect the light gates so they measure the velocity between the two points
4- give the glider a gentle push so it passes through
5-The velocity does not change between the two gates
What is newtons second law ?
resultant foce (N) = mass(kg) x acceleration (m/s^2)
What’s the equation for newtons second law ?
F = m x a
The acceleration is ..……….. to the resultant force
directly proportional
What is mass ?
the amount of matter in a body. measured in kg
What is weight ?
It’s a force and is a measure of the size of the gravitational pull on an object exerted.
What is the earth’s gravitational field strength ?
10N/kg
What’s the equation for Weight ?
W = m x g
What is the unit for weight ?
Newtons (N)
What is the equation and units for g ?
W units = m/s^2
g= —–
m
What speed do all objects fall at in the absence of air resistance ?
10m/s^2
