chapter 2 (diversity of matter via its physical properties) Flashcards
What are the 5 main classes of materials?
Ceramics
Metals
Plastic
Glass
Fibres
What are physical properties of a material?
Qualities that can be observed and measured without changing its composition.
What is electrical conductivity?
It is the measure of how easily an electric current flows through a material.
What is thermal conductivity?
It is the measure of how easily heat flows through a material.
What is melting point and boiling point?
The melting point is the temperature at which a material changes from the solid state to the liquid state.
The boiling point is the temperature at which a material changes from the liquid state to the gaseous state.
What is strength?
Strength is the ability to support a heavy load without changing its shape permanently.
What is hardness?
Hardness is a materials resistance to wear, tear and scratches.
What is flexibility?
Flexibility is a materials ability to bend without breaking, and return to its initial shape and size after bending.
What does density refer to?
it refers to the amount of matter an object has in proportion to its volume.
How do we determine the density of an object?
Take its mass divided by its volume
What does a lower density (compared to water) object do in water?
It floats.
What does the density of an object affect?
It’s ability to sink or float.
If the density of an object is high, its mass is also high. True or false?
True.
