chapter 1 (scientific endeavour) secondary 1 Flashcards
What is data that we can see and touch called?
Qualitative data.
What is measurements that are numerical quantities called?
Quantitative data.
What is a proposed explanation in science called?
A hypothesis.
What is the independent variable?
The variable that is changed in an experiment.
What is a dependent variable?
The thing is being measured or observed in an experiment.
What is the SI unit of temperature?
Kelvin. (K)
What is accuracy?
Accuracy is how close a reading is to the actual reading.
What is precision?
Precision is how close multiple readings are to each other.
What is zero error?
Zero error is when a measuring instrument shows a reading when nothing is placed on it.
How does parallax error occur?
Parallax error occurs when a measurement on a instrument is viewed from the wrong angle.
How do we prevent parallax error when using rulers?
Position the eye so that the line of sight is perpendicular to the ruler.
How do we prevent parallax error when using a measuring cylinder?
Position the eye so that the line of sight is level with the bottom of the meniscus.
What is the meniscus?
Curved surface of the liquid.
How do we prevent parallax error when using spring balances?
Position the eye so that the line of sight is perpendicular to the marking on the scale.
How do we prevent parallax error when using thermometers?
Position the eye so that the line of sight is level with the TOP of the meniscus.
