Chapter 2 Data Flashcards
DATA
Systematically recorded information, whether numbers or labels, together with its context.
. Information in context
CONTEXT
Tells WHO, WHAT was measured, HOW was the the data collected, WHERE the data was collected and WHEN and WHY the study was performed
Explain the W,s of data
They nail down the context of data
. WHO =cases/subject
. WHAT =variables
These are the most important, without these you dont have data
VARIABLES
give information about the WHO= cases.
They hold the same characteristic for many cases.
(Meta data)
. Characteristics recorded by each case/individual
CASE
Is an individual about whom or which we have data
DATA TABLE
An arrangement of data in which each
. ROW represents a CASE(WHO) found on the the far left ( aka RECORDS)
.COLUMN REPRESENTS a variable( WHAT).
RESPONDENTS
Individuals that answer a survey
Subjects/ PARTICIPANTS
People who are experimented on
EXPERIMENTAL UNITS
Are inanimate objects that are experimented on
SAMPLES
The cases we actually examine in seeking to understand the much larger population
POPULATION
All the cases we wish we knew about
UNITS
A quantity or amount adopted as a standard of measurement egs: dollars, hours,or grams.
. they tell how each value has been measured
. they tell us the SCALE of a measurement
CATEGORICAL VARIABLES
A variable that names categories ( whether in words or numerals)
. aka QUALITATIVE
. descriptive/labels/identify
QUANTITATIVE VARIABLE
concern what is MEASURED they must include UNITS
. A variable in which the numbers act as numerical values
ORDINAL VARIABLES
Variables in order without any units
