Population
The entire group of individuals or instances of who we hope to learn
Sample
A representative subset of a population examined in hope of learning about that population
Sample survey
Polls designed to ask questions of small group of people in the hope of learning something about the entire population
Biased
Sample methods that tend to over or underemphasize some characterize of the population
Randomizing
Ensures that on average the sample looks like the rest of the population
What is most important when doing a sample
The “NUMBER” OF INDIVIDUALS IN THE SAMPLE is more important than size population
Census
A sample that include all individuals of the entire population
Models
Use mathematics to represent reality
Parameters

Population parameter
A parameter used in a model for a population
Statistics
Any summary found from data ( aka sample statistics )
Representative
A sample that is said to be representative if the statistics computed from it accurately reflect the corresponding population parameters
Simple random Sample
in which each COMBINATION( set of n elements) in the population has an equal chance of selection
Sample Frame
Is a list of individuals from which the sample is drawn
