What were the motives of Jamestown Colonists ?
They didn’t come for for religious freedom, they came to get rich.
When and what was the 1st settlement in the New World?
1st permanent settlement in which was Jamestown 1607.
What happened to the colonists in during the first year ?
90% of them died. Their main mistake was they wanted to find riches instead of planting crops.
What was a joint-stock company ?
People invested money in the colony to become rich to the tune of 5 Million dollars.
Who was John Smith ?
He kept Jamestown from dying and helps them survive the hardships.
Who is John Rolfe ?
Teaches them to grow tobacco, makes them financially stable, and promote economic growth.
What is the Headright System ?
Anyone who paid for someone else’s passage or their own received 50 acres of land.
What were indentured servants ?
Came to America and worked 4-7 years. Lower class of society .
What is a Royal Colony ?
A colony that is under direct control of the King .
What is Bacon Rebellion ?
Nathaniel Bacon hated Indians and created his own group of army men to fight the native Americans. He conquered Jamestown in 1676 but raised issues about the lack of taxation without representation in the House of Burgesses. But soon after conquering , Bacon dies and Gov. Berkeley was able to restore peace to the town.
Who and where was the 2nd attempt at a settlement in the New World ?
Plymouth, Massachusetts . Puritans, separatists and pilgrims moved there. The people who setup Plymouth are religious if you don’t like their beliefs you can leave (separatists).
What was the Mayflower Compact ?
Rules for the colony , first formed participatory government.
Who is Roger Williams ?
(Extreme Seperatists) Declared that English settlers had no right to claim land unless purchased by native Americans . Because of this the general court tried to deport but fled , purchased land from Indians and created providence, RI and guaranteed separation of church and state and religious freedom.
Who was Anne Hutchinson ?
She said that worshipers didn’t need the church or ministers to interpret the bible . In 1638 she was banished and moved to Rhode Island.
What is a Proprietary Colony ?
One person is the owner/operator of the colony . Example (Pennsylvania , William Penn Quakers. The king owed his family a lot of money so he gave him that land in a New World , he setup as a safe haven for Quakers and they were tolerant of other Religious Beliefs.
