Chapter 2 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances.
Chemical Reaction
A solid that is produces as a result of a chemical reaction in solution
Precipitate
The color of something
Pigment
a green color inside of plants
Chlorophyll
A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance
Chemical Formula
A representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products
Chemical Equation
A substance or molecule that precipitates in a chemical reaction
Reactant
The substance that forms in a chemical reaction
Product
The Law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes
Law of Conservation of Mass
A number written below and two the right of a chemical symbol in a formula
Subscript
A number that is placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula.
Coefficient
A force that holds two atoms together in a molecule
Chemical Bond
A reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a new compound
Synthesis Reaction
A reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction in which one element or radical takes the place of another element or radical in a compund
Single-Displacement Reaction
A reaction in which a gas, a solid precipitate, or a molecular compound forms from the exchange of ions between two compounds
Double-Displacement Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is released to the surroundings
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction that required heat
Endothermic Reaction
The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another
Law of Conservation of Energy
The minimum amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction
Activation Energy
A substance that slows down or stops a chemical reaction
Inhibitor
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up or changed very much.
Catalyst
The speed at which new particles form
Rate of a Reaction
A measure of the amount of one substance dissolved into another substance
Concentration
