Chapter 1 Chemical Bonds Flashcards
The combining of atoms to form molecules or ionic compounds
Chemical Bonding
An interaction that holds atoms or ions together
Chemical Bond
An electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and that determines the atom’s chemical properties
Valence Electron
A bond that forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, which results in a positive ion and a negative ion
Ionic Bond
A charged particle that forms when an atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons
Ion
The regular pattern in which a crystal is arranged
Crystal Lattice
A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Covalent Bond
The smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of that substance
Molecule
A bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them
Metalic Bond
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.
Atomic Number
Denoting binary compounds of a nonmetallic or more electronegative element or group.
-ide
Molecules composed of only two atoms, of the same or different chemical elements.
Diatomic Models
They are all gases, and they form molecules because they don’t have full valence shells on their own.
Diatomic Elements
Its when a solid material stretches under tensile stress.
Ductility
Its when a material may be flattened into thin sheets by hammering or rolling.
Malleability
