Chapter 2 Cell Organisations in human and plants Flashcards
What are tissues
Group of cells that have the same structure and function and are arranged together to carry out a specific function
Examples of tissues
Epithelial, muscle, nerve, connective
Where does the epithelial tissues cover?
Covers the outer surface and hollow surfaces in the body
What is the function of the epithelial tissues
Adapts based on its function
Protect against infections, injuries, chemicals and dehydration
Specific places the epithelial tissues cover
Surface of lungs, mouth, small intestine, blood vessels
What are the 3 known types of muscle tissue?
Smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle
Where can the smooth muscle be found?
Blood vessel, reproductive tract, digestive tract
Where can the skeletal muscle be found?
Legs and hands
Where can the cardiac muscle be found?
Heart wall
Function of smooth muscle?
Contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle enables involuntary activities such as peristalsis
Function of skeletal muscle?
Contraction and relaxation of skeletal muscle generates movement in bones and limbs (controlled movement)
Function of cardiac muscle?
Builds walls of the heart that contract to pump blood to the whole body ( involuntary )
What is nerve tissue made of?
Neuron, which consists of a cell body and nerve fibre called dendrite and axon
Function of nerve tissues?
Detect stimuli and send information in the form of an electrical signal
Regulates and control body activity
Use of connective tissue?
Link organs
Types of connective tissue
bone, blood tissue, adipose tissue, cartilage, loose connective tissue, Fibrous connective tissue
Function of blood tissue
Plays a role in transportation, protection and regulation
Function of bone
Forms the body frame and protects internal organs
Function of loose connective tissue
Link epithelial tissue to the tissue below it and fixes organs in position
Function of adipose tissue
Keeps fat under the skin dermis and the surface of all main organs
Function of cartilage
Encloses bone tips to prevent them from wearing out
Function of fibrous connective tissue
Forms tendons and ligaments. Tendons connect muscle and bone while ligaments connect bones to bones
What is the function of the parenchyma tissue?
stores starch, protein and water
Can carry out photosynthesis
What is the function of the collenchyma tissue?
Functions in giving support to the young, non-woody stems
What is the function of the sclerenchyma tissue?
Providing support and mechanical strength to all mature parts of the plant
What are vascular tissues made up of
Xylem tissue and phloem tissue
Function of xylem tissue
Transports water and mineral salts from the roots to other parts of the plant
Function of phloem tissue
Transports organic matter such as sucrose from the leaves the other parts of the plants
What cell component is found in abundance in pancreatic cell and goblet cell and what is it use?
Golgi apparatus and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Increase synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes and produce mucus
What cell component is found in abundance in the liver and what is its use?
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum, metabolizes carbohydrates and carries out detoxification of drugs/poisons
