Chapter 2-Cell divison Flashcards
The cell cycle;
Growth/DNA replication—Mitosis
What is mitosis?
A cell divides to grow/replace cells
What is binary fission?
Prokaryotic cells replicate into two identical daughter cells
What are the stages of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
What is prophase?
First stage of mitosis, chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart
What is metaphase?
Second stage of mitosis, two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
What is anaphase?
Third stage of mitosis, membranes form around the sets of chromosomes which become nuclei for the two new cells
What is telophase?
Last stage of mitosis, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide giving two new daughter cells
Conditions for binary fission;
Warm with nutrients, if the conditions are unfavourable the cell stops dividing and dies
What is cloning?
Using stem cells (from embryo or bone marrow) to create genetically identical cells
