Chapter 1-Cells Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
An animal or plant cell
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A simple cell,eg;bacteria
Features of an animal cell;
Nucleus,Mitochondria,Cytoplasm,Cell membrane,Ribosomes
Features of a plant cell;
Nucleus,mitochondria,cell membrane,cell wall,chloroplast and vacuole
Features of a bacteria cell;
No nucleus,plasmids,no chloroplast or mitochondria
How do you calculate magnification?
Magnification=Image size/Real size
What does an electron microscope see?
Mitochondria,ribosomes,plasmids (small cell structures)
Genetic material from largest-smallest;
Nucleus, chromosomes,DNA,genes
What is active transport?
Substances are absorbed against a concentration gradient
What is osmosis?
Movement of water from a high to low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
What is diffusion?
Particles move from a high to low concentration
Examples of specialised cells;
Sperm cell, nerve cell, muscle cell, root hair cell, phloem/xylem cells
Practical for osmosis;
Cut potato into same size, measure and record mass, place in different concentrations of sugar, leave overnight, measure new mass
Practical for using a microscope;
Cut a bit of onion, peel off outer layer, place on slide, add a drop of iodine, place over glass, remove excess iodine, place under microscope, start at a low magnification
