Chapter 2 - Biological Bases of Psychology Flashcards
What is the Central Nervous System?
The network of nerves contained within the brain and spinal cord. consists of the brain and the spinal Cord
What are important parts of the Central Nervous System?
Spinal Cord and The Brain
What is the Spinal Cord?
Long tubular column of neural tissue surrounded by a ring of bone that runs from the lower back up to the base of the skull.
What is the Brain?
The centerpiece of the body’s nervous system, an elaborate electrochemical communication network that connects the brain and spinal cord to all sensory organs, muscles, and glands.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
- Consists of all the nerves that radiate from the CNS to the rest of the body
- Control autonomic body functions
- Control motor movements
- Digestion
- Relay sensory information to the central nervous system
Think CNS —> PNS —> Somatic + Autonomic
Autonomic —? Parasympathetic + Sympathetic
What two Components is the Peripheral Nervous System divided into?
Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
What does the Somatic Nervous System do?
Transmit signals to the Central Nervous System
- Responsible for Voluntary Movement
- Transmit Signals for Five Senses
(Part of PNS)
What is the Autonomic Nervous System?
Connects the CNS to all of the smooth involuntary muscles and organs.
- Transmit Signals to Vital Organs
- RESPONSIBLE FOR NON VOLUNTARY PROCESSES
What are two parts of the Autonomic Nervous System?
Sympathetic Nervous System
and
Para Sympathetic Nervous System
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System Responsible for?
Responsible for flight or fight response
What is the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Responsible for Reversing effects of Flight or Fight Response
Calming you down
What Order is the Peripheral Nervous system parts in?
Peripheral
Somatic and Autonomic
Autonomic
Sympathetic and Parasypmathetic
Where are Horomones produced?
Soft Tissue then secreted into bloodstream
What is Hypothalamus?
Control Center connecting endocrine system and nervous system (Sends messages to pituary gland)
What is Pituary Gland?
-Master gland of all other glands (Gets message from hypothalamus then sends messages to all other glands)
