Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is the relative mass of an electron?
1/1836
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses.
What are the difference in physical properties of isotopes?
higher mass isotopes have higher boiling point, melting point and density.
What is the relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is the relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th of the mass if an atom of carbon-12.
How does a mass spectrometer work?
VIADD
- A sample is placed in the spectrometer.
- Sample is Vaporised and then Ionised to form positive ions.
- Ions are Accelerated. Heavier ions move slower and are more difficult to Deflect than lighter ions, so the ions of each isotope are separated.
- The ions are Detected on a mass spectrum as a mass-to-charge ration m/z. Each ion adds to the signal so the greater the abundance, the larger the signa
