Chapter 2 Flashcards
When are disabilities identified ?
Usually early by parents or physicians
All infants, toddlers and preschool kids are entitled to special Ed services
Pre Referral
Gathering data
Designed to see if the student qualifies for a referral process and reduce the process and placement of all in special Ed
The child may just need extra attention or explaining. You work with the child to see if anything will help before referring them
THE PRE REFERAL PROCESS IS NOT SPECIAL EDUCATION
Criterion-Referenced Test
CRA compares the performance of a student to a given criterion
Objective in a curriculum / mastery of content
Monitor students if they are picking up a skill
Must get a certain amount correct to meet grade level
SKILL LEVEL& NOT NORM REFERNECED
Curriculum Based Assessment
End of chapter/ year test
Summative
Not diagnostic but will give you an idea of what’s going on
Ex: Bench mark tests
Compare students against the standards of mastery of the curriculum
Curriculum Based Measurment
Formative
Measures students progress frequently by comparing progress with expected rate of progress
Their personal rate of learning
May be used diagnostically for skills assessed and rate of learning
Are they approaching grade level curriculum and their own base line?
Why use error analysis ?
Analyze the errors students make to determine a pattern to help them fix it
What are they frequently getting wrong?
Provides information on HOW TO TEACH
Think out loud strategy
Student talks his way through what they did to get the answer
Understand their thought process on how they get answers
Response to Intervention (RTI)
MANDATED BY IDEA2004
Based on the pre Referral process these are the different things that will be attempted to help the child before giving a special Ed referral
1st Tier
Delivered in general Ed classroom. Ex separating into reading groups
2nd Tier
More intensive
Ex: Pull out of classroom
3rd tier
Very intense and frequent to see if child will respond.
Last 12 weeks tops
after this a decision is made
3-5% do not respond to any tiers and are classified
The Referral process
After pre-referral intervention and the child has not responded a referral for special ed will be made by parents , teachers ,ect
This is a formal evaluation of 60 days
Typically end of 2nd-3rd grade
Common evaluation procedures
Evaluation must happen as apart of referral process
psychological :intelligence behavioral and developmental testing (comparing them to peers , Norm Ref)
Educational : achievement
Speech and Language
Occupational
Eligibility for Special Ed services
Must meet one or more disability categories
Students will not be considered if there is lack of appropriate instruction in reading and math
Or have limited English proficiency
