chapter 2 Flashcards
Slices of the brain that are cut in a Sagittarius plane, cut parallel to the vertical plane that divides the brain into left and right halves
Sagittal sections
Sections of the brain that are cut in a horizontal plane, cut parallel to the horizon when the subject is in an upright position
Horizontal sections
A sagittal section that is cut from the very middle of the brain
Midsagittal section
Slices of the brain that are cut in a coronal or frontal plane, that is, cut approximately parallel to the surface of the face
Coronal sections
Sections that are cut at right angles to the long axis of any long narrow structure, for example, at right angles to the long axis of the spinal cord
Cross sections
Toward the nose end; aka rostral
Anterior
Toward the tail end; aka caudal
Posterior
Toward the surface of the back or top of the head
Dorsal
Toward the surface of the chest and stomach or the bottom of the head
Ventral
Toward the midsagittal plane
Medial
Away from the midsagittal plane
Lateral
Toward the dorsal surface of the primate head
Superior
Toward the central surface of the primate head
Inferior
On one side of the body
Unilateral
On both sides of the body
Bilateral
