Explain what is meant by mindful caregiving.
Balancing the science of nursing with the art of caregiving in a thoughtful, efficient way.
Define ethical decisions.
Decisions that are made based on someone’s values. Usually related to values about quality of life. Resident and family usually make ethical decisions about care along with a physician. If you feel like someone is making a wrong decision, talk to the charge nurse. Never argue with a resident or family member about values or ethics.
Describe the nursing team.
- Director of nursing- develops the philosophy and approach for care.
- Assistant director of nursing- helps the director put into action the philosophy and approach for care.
- Director of staff development- oversees staff education in the philosophy and approach to nursing care.
- Charge nurses- day-to-day responsibility for supervising resident care.
- Staff nurses- depends on the facilities staffing needs. Responsible for special treat,nets and medications,
- Nurse assistants- report to charge nurses or staff nurses. Give 80% of all resident care.
Explain the importance of developing a trusting relationship with the charge nurse and co-workers.
It will he,l you give quality care. You need to feel you are partners to reach the caregiving goals of residents.

- Do any residents have special needs today?
- Do I need help from the charge nurse at any to,e to give a resident treatment?
- Does the charge nurse want any particular things done first?

Describe the four different approaches to care.
- Recognize resident’s as individuals. Find out likes/dislikes, learn about their culture, get to know their routine.
- Promote residents’ autonomy (self-determination). Understand/respect their rights, maintain privacy, encourage them to maintain their highest level of functioning.
- Provide mindful caregiving. Balance the science and skills and the art of caregiving.
- Be a good employee. Be reliable, healthy, considerate, follow policies.

Resident’s needs, philosophy of caring, new treatments and equipment, federal and state regulations, and staffing.
Describe 4 essential job functions common to nurse assistant job descriptions.
- Personal care functions. Bathing, dressing grooming, prep for medical tests and exams, transferring into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, etc.
- Nursing care functions. Provide nursing functions directed by supervisor, catheter care, change dressings, turn residents, measure and record temp, pulse, etc,
- Food service functions, prepare residents for meals and snacks, assist in feeding if needed, record food and fluid intake, perform after meal resident care.
- Resident’s rights functions. Maintain confidentiality, kindness, dignity, and respect,
