Administrative Law
Law relating to the relationship between people and the various government departments, boards, and agencies
Bylaws
Laws that deal with local issues and are passed by the municipal governments
Civil/Private Law
Laws that govern relationships between private individuals and individuals and organizations. Example) an organization suing another organization or an individual suing another individual
Constitutional Law
Law dealing with the distribution and exercise of government powers
Contract Law
Branch of civil law that has rules regarding agreements between people and businesses
Example) purchasing
Criminal Law
Law that identifies crimes and punishments
Distinguishing a case
Identifying a case as being different from a previous case in order to warrant a different decision
Domestic Law
Law that governs activity within a nation’s borders
International Law
Law dealing with relations between independent nations
Jurisdiction
The political and legal right to pass and enforce laws, or the judicial authority to decide a case
Procedural Law
Law that describes how substantive law will be enforced and ensures that people are treated fairly. Example) Trial
Property Law
Branch of civil law that regulates ownership rights in all property and includes law governing the transfer of property
Public Law
Law relating to relationships between individuals and the state
Statute Law
A law or act passed by the government
Substantive law
Law that defines the rights, duties, and obligations of citizens and governments
