Thoughts we are currently aware of. Changes as new thoughts enter our mind. Only a small fraction of memory storage. Can have numerous thoughts at once
Conscious thought
Unconscious material that can be brought forward with minimal effort
Preconscious
No immediate access to these thoughts. Cannot bring information to our immediate mind except under certain circumstances.
Unconscious
Description of the dream as we recall it. What one remembers from a dream. Censored version of our dream. Not a true representation of the unconscious.
Manifest content
The real meaning of our dreams
Latent Content
Rational mental activity governed by pleasure principal.
Desire to have needs met. Seek pleasure - avoid pain.
Primary Process Thinking
Rational thought. More logical and organized. Governed by Reality Principal. Conscious and preconscious - what is actually happening around us.
Secondary Process Thinking
Amount of mental energy a person is born with. The life/sexual instinct.
Libido
Death instinct
Thanatos
Source of our cravings, impulses, sexual and agressive thoughts. Operates on Pleasure Principal. Concerned with immediate satisfaction.
Id
Medatior. Mediates between desires and reality. The executive part of personality (plans, organizes)
Can’t always have everything we want.
Ego
Our conscious. Tells us societal standards. How one knows right from wrong.
Superego
Created when 3 structures (Id, ego, superego) are in oppositions (when they disagree).
Instrapsychic conflict
Stages
1) oral
2) anal
3) phallic
4) latency
5) genital
