Chapter 2 Flashcards
1
Q
When does fizzing occur in a reaction?
A
When a gas is released
2
Q
What is the formula of ammonia and ammonium?
A
Ammonia = NH3
Ammonium = NH4 (+1 charge)
3
Q
What is the relative mass of an electron?
A
1/1836
4
Q
What is the charge of a proton?
A
+1.60217733 x 10^-19
5
Q
What is the charge of a neutron?
A
-1.60217733 x 10^-19C
6
Q
What are positive and negative ions called?
A
Cation = +
Anion = -
7
Q
What is Mr and Ar relative to?
A
1/12 mass of a carbon - 12
8
Q
Meaning of weighted mean?
A
Takes into account the percentage abundance of each isotope and relative isotopic mass of each
9
Q
How does mass spectrometry work?
A
- Sample is vaporised
- Sample is ionise (so it can be detected) to form positive +1 ions (always)
- Ions are accelerated. Heavier ones move slower than lighter ones
- When the ions hit the detector, current is produced which forms the mass spectrum graph
10
Q
What are the axis on the mass spectrum graph?
A
X axis = mass to charge ratio (m/z)
Y axis = abundance (%)
